Class Etiquette
Be respectful
Treat others with the same respect that you expect then to show you. Students may be excluded for consistent inappropriate behaviour.
Arrive on time
Most classes begin with a briefing, so lateness means you will miss out. Teachers will not repeat instructions for late students.
Listen
If a teacher is talking, listen. Please don’t have side conversations, talk over other people or interrupt.
Personal Hygiene
Students must maintain proper personal hygiene at all times, ensuring a healthy & comfortable learning environment.
Be coachable
You’re here to learn, and taking feedback is part of that process. Be coachable and you will excel in your studies.
Ask questions
Raise your hand to ask a question, and when others are asking questions, listen, you may learn something.
Dont interrupt
If a student asks a question, please refrain from answering it. Leave the teacher to do their job.
Be organised
Practice good time management, and keep your graphic design files organised in project folders & saved on OneDrive.
Be tidy
Leave the workstation or classroom clean and tidy for the next person to use. We also have disinfectant wipes if needed.
Attend all classes
Projects that have been entirely developed and produced without the teacher’s supervision may not be accepted to be assessed.
Stay until the end
Please avoid leaving class early as it is disruptive to the teacher and the class and you may miss vital information.
Respect Equipment
Take care of the furniture and equipment, don’t cut on unprotected surfaces (use a cutting mat) and tidy up after yourself.
Computer access
Students aren’t guaranteed the same computer for every class, and may only access computers outside of regular class time with the current teacher’s permission.
Enter when invited
If a class is in session, knock and wait for the teacher to invite you in. Then introduce yourself and explain what you need to the teacher.
Valuables
Your valuables are your responsibility. Please ensure your personal items are kept safe when on campus.
No mobile phones
If you need to take a call, please inform your teacher and step outside of the class discreetly.
No food or drink
Food, drink and computers don’t mix. Please ensure you eat and drink outside the classroom.
No Smoking
Smoking is NOT permitted anywhere on campus, including vapes.
No flip flops
Enclosed footwear must be worn on campus at all times.
No Spray Adhesive
Spray adhesives are banned on campus. This includes the stairwells.
Hornsby TAFE Design & Photography – Generative Artificial Intelligence Use Policy
What is Generative Artificial Intelligence?
Software that generates text, computer code, audio, images and videos in response to text input.
We believe students should be equipped to use Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) responsibly in their future careers and teachers have created opportunities in the design & photography assessments at Hornsby TAFE where they will have the opportunity to use Generative AI proactively.
However, students are expected to apply critical thinking and to produce original design and written work for their assessments, therefor the use of Generative AI in any written work or design work is permitted only when stated in the assessment instructions.
If the use of Generative A has not been stated in the assessment instructions, you are not permitted to use it during the design process, or to produce written work for that assessment.
Assessments where the use of Generative AI is permitted or required, will explicitly state the extent and the appropriate use in the assessment instructions.
If it states in the assessment instructions that you are permitted to use Generative AI, you must disclose in your written and design work that you have used Generative AI by including the following disclaimer: * Generative AI has been used in the production of this work.
Inappropriate use of Generative AI is a breach of academic integrity, such as:
- Using Generative AI to produce written or design work for an assessment where it explicitly states that it is not permitted in the assessment instructions.
- Not acknowledging the use of content created by Generative AI in your written or design work, where the appropriate use of such tools is stated in the assessment instructions.
Where it is suspected that a learner has not submitted their own work, used Generative AI in an assessment that states that they cannot, or used Generative AI and not included the disclaimer, they may be invited to discuss understanding of the submitted content, the process of arriving at the solution and show any evidence such as drafts and research.

Logging In
Your TAFE NSW Login
Take care to note the Username and Password you are given, as these will give you access to the TAFE computers, our server, the TAFE server and the internet.
Your Username and Password will look like:
Username: firstname.lastname@studytafensw.edu.au
Password: whatever you were provided with
When you log into a TAFE computer check that @studytafensw.edu.au appears in your username, eg firstname.lastname@studytafensw.edu.au and then your password.
You can change your password through the Student Portal. If you forget your username or password, please call TAFE IT Technical Support on 1300 823 343 or go across to the Library to have it reset.
Logging into Moodle
Go to my.tafensw.edu.au and log in using your username and password issued to you when you confirmed your enrollment. Only fully active students will be able to login.
If you log in successfully, you should now see your Student Portal. This is where you can access your email and other TAFE services, including checking your results later in the semester. If you are logging in for the first time with a temporary password you will be prompted to Change Password immediately – please do this as instructed.

Logging into Adobe Creative Cloud
As a TAFE student you have a free subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud, available for your use at home. To access your subscription you must login to Adobe using your TAFE email address.
Once you are logged into Adobe, follow the steps to download and install the Creative Cloud app, then Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator. Photo students also download Lightroom and Bridge.
NOTE: You must have an ACTIVE enrolment to use the ADOBE subscription. If you are still unable to login to ADOBE successfully, it means that you may not have been added to the list of students eligible to use the free subscription. If that is the case, please send an email to orlando.luminere@tafensw.edu.au and Orlando will log a request to have you added to the list asap.
Logging into Office 365
As a TAFE student you have a free subscription to Office 365 available for your use at home. To access your subscription you must login to Microsoft using your TAFE email address
This will bring you back to this familiar login window
Once you are logged into Office 365, follow the steps to download and install the entire suite, most importantly Word, Outlook and Teams
Managing your design files using Microsoft One Drive
One drive is an excellent way to access files across multiple devices. It means that you can access all your saved files from any TAFE computer, and your home computer.
We do not recommend saving files to the desktop / documents folder of the Mac computers at TAFE. We cannot ensure you have access to the same computers at all times, and the hard drive is wiped at the end of each term so you may lose valuable files.
On your home computer, you can download & install the One Drive app. When you are at TAFE, the One Drive app can be found in the Applications folder of the mac you are working on.
For detailed instructions on how to do this, view the PDF tutorial
Each time you are on a new Mac computer at TAFE:
- Launch the One Drive app from Applications
- Login with your TAFE email address and password
- Follow the on-screen prompts to install the One Drive folder in Mac finder
Once installed, you will see a new folder appear on the sidebar of Mac finder / Windows explorer called One Drive. Here you can set up a folder for each class and project, organising your files into folders such as DOCUMENTS, LINKS, PDFs or any others you desire.
We recommend that you use this option so that you can access your files on any TAFE computer, as well as your home computer. This avoids losing files, having to login to the same computer for each class every week, or interrupting other classes to login to a computer and retrieve files.
Your Study
Assessments
You must pass all projects to pass the course and obtain your qualification. Assessment documents will be supplied by your teacher. All projects must be submitted by the deadline.
Although students are expected to continue working on their projects outside class hours, students are required to develop and discuss each stage of their work with their teacher in class. Projects that have been entirely developed and produced without the teacher’s supervision may not be accepted to be assessed.
All projects must be submitted to your class teacher. Unless other arrangements have been made, projects must not be submitted to anyone else. All work must have the teacher’s name, class name, student name and student number clearly indicated.
Near the end of your course, it is your responsibility to double check that all your units have been assessed and marked as Satisfactory. This will ensure that you have ‘course complete’ to facilitate a smooth transition to any following course.
If a student receives an Unsatisfactory mark for an assessment, under some circumstances work may be redone and resubmitted but you will need to discuss this with your teacher.
Calendar
View the Tafe Student Calendar for this year through the Student Resources menu above.
Excursions
You are asked to sign the Field Excursions Participation Form for each excursion, your teacher will give this to you. If you are under 18 years of age we require a parent or guardian signature.
Folder Structure
Organising your design files is important – so remember folder structure!
You should have a folder for each class, and each project. In each project folder you should organise your files for that project. For example, use an Admin folder to keep your assessment documents in, a links folder for images and a PDF folder for any PDF’s you will need to submit.
You can setup your folders and files how you wish, but devise a structure that works for you and use it across all your classes.

Food & Drink
No food or drink is to be consumed in any of the classrooms or computer labs.
Mobile Phones
Students may not use mobile phones in the classroom. If you need to take a call, please excuse yourself and step outside momentarily.
Moodle
All students (Certificate III, Certificate IV and Diploma) will gain access to the TAFE Moodle via the internet. This is where you will download assessments and resources, and where you will upload your files for marking.
Personal Information
Make sure you advise the TAFE Information Office Infopoint of any change of postal address, email address or telephone numbers. If we do not have current contact details, important documents may not reach you.
Saving your files
As you progress through your course, you will accumulate a large amount of information in the form of electronic files. All projects, reference material, photographs etc, should be saved to your OneDrive account, or to a USB drive while you are a student at Hornsby TAFE.
Your OneDrive or USB drive should also be backed up to an external hard drive at least once a week. Don’t rely on saving to the classroom computers as these can be deleted at any time – there is no guarantee that you will always be able to access the same computer every time.
We suggest either backing up your USB drive often by copying it to another USB drive, or setting up OneDrive on your home computer and backing it up from there to an external hard drive. Then when you’re on Campus you can work from your OneDrive as all files will be synced across devices.

- Equipment and facilities are available for use during and after classes, please speak to your teacher for direction.
- Manage your time efficiently. The more work you do in class under supervision the less you will have to do at home by yourself.
- If for any reason you are having difficulties with the course, discuss your problems with one of the Graphic Design staff or a Student Counsellor. Tackle a problem before it gets out of hand or begins to affect your studies.
